LIFE. After living and traveling the world in her band The Waifs Donna Simpson is finally moving back to her beloved Fremantle town with great fond memories of the place.
She confesses that she has missed the Australian culture and the Fremantle lifestyle.

Amongst her busy schedule of music commitments she has also been working as an assistant photographer for the past 2 years in America. Thus creating an even bigger passion for photography.

FACT. She recently lost thousands of digital images due to an external hard drive crash which was the most devasting thing that’s ever happened to her. She expresses that it was harder than divorce! She cried for weeks, and still hasn't gotten over it.

Who is Sara Winfield ?

"My name is Sara Winfield and I am an emerging Perth illustrator / artist. I am originally from a town in the south west of WA. The outdoors, natural environment an clean fresh air are elements of my childhood I would never take back, and are influences I strongly encourage throughout my work. I have a love for anything visual, descriptive, unexplainable, wrapped in brown recycled paper, covered in beach sand or bleached from the sun.

After a small stint studying fashion design, I was allured to the free nature of art and painting, and how it has allowed for a more personal and direct outlet for my creative energies.

My works are distinctly autobiographical in subject, and seek to portray elements of feeling, unresolved issue and thought through the use of the female figure and expressive paint applications. The initial drawing element of each painting is integral in the mood and concept of each work, and is where I find the best portrayal of human form and existence."

1) CARVE IT UP ! Lino Printing

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Sarah Hannah is an art teacher at a school in Wellard. She manages to squeeze time for her personal art practice-involving wheel thrown ceramics, felt making and printing.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

Sarah will teach students basic lino carving techniques by creating a lino block depicting an animal, person or object. The students will develop a range of interesting collaged backgrounds that will enhance and contrast with the lino print. Students will print their lino onto their collaged backgrounds as well as onto white print paper that they can then work back into with watercolour paints. They will be able to take their edition of prints home that same day to frame and display.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING

An interesting image/photo of a pet, animal, person, building, funky old car, treasured object etc to use as inspiration for your lino.

MASK MAKING

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Ali J is an artist/illustrator that creates artworks that are whimsical, dreamy and invoke the imagination. Her characters are modern; fashionable and often feature red rosy cheeks. Each character has a unique personality and style that often reminds others of someone they know. Clients include the Australian Copyright Council, Peppermint Magazine, Rachael Berry, Fox and Willow, Sony/BMG and Oxford University Press. Her illustrations have appeared on products such as greeting cards, badges, cards and prints as well as in magazines and books, on clothing and CD's.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

This mask-making workshop will allow participants to illustrate, design and create their own modern day masks. Participants will be able to create their own masks. Each mask can be drawn, collage, embellished, decorated and created in any way shape or form their imagination takes them. At the end of the workshop you will leave with your own mask created with your own two hands.

ANYA BROCK

With a background in both fashion design and art, Anya Brock has spent the last 8 years running the Perth based label ANAN and more recently working for high end designers Christopher Kane and Richard Nicoll in London. Since moving back to Australia at the end of 2010 Anya has decided to concentrate on what she considers for her a more direct form of self expression, painting.

Anya’s subject matter and style vary from washed out, sensual girls faces to bright, tactile, drippy birds as well as stark, graphic geometric compositions. The need to constantly evolve and experiment with technique and subject matter is something Anya feels is necessary to stay passionate about her work and life.

Anya’s experience within the fashion industry is evident in her work, gravitating towards aloof, sensual and often seductive female images as well as bright, ‘poppy’ colour palettes. Anya’s “girls” are captivating, intriguing and beguiling. They express the complicated nature of female sexuality: innocent and playful, and at times deceptive and powerful.

Feast Your Eyes has been asked by the friendly people at the new (not even opened yet!) Origins cafe to create and fill the amazing space behind the new roasting house.

THE SPACE

Location: 101 High Street Fremantle (In the ♥ of Fremantle)

Dimensions: 10.7 X 5.8 (Huge Space)

Ceiling Height: Very High

Bargain Cost : $150.00 a week

Bargain Commission on Artwork: 20%

THE OPTIONS

1) The gallery offers walls for emerging artists to display their works. A new space is created every 2 weeks with a new artist OR group of Artists. Artists are asked to bring their own studio into the space for a day of interaction with the public.

2) The gallery also invites artists to partake in the "FYE Studio Program'. The program provides a studio space for an artist or group of artists for 2 weeks. During the 2 weeks the artist or group of artists will create works for an opening exhibition, which will be launched following week.
The program connects the public with the artist on a more personal level. People will be to watch you work reviling the process of an artist or group of artists preparation for an exhibition. Gallery manager Sarah Blangiardo will take you through the curating process and be with you every step of the way. The program is opened to all ages and the artist or artists are to be there 10 hours a week whilst the gallery opened. More are hours are welcomed and time are negotiable.

Michelle Williamson is currently studying Fine Arts at Curtain University. Her work ranges form painting to photography, butmy passion lies in stop motion animation.

Introducing emerging film maker Jason Stringer. Jason is part of the trio at Quarter To Four. Quarter To Four is the craft of three young filmmakers from Perth, Western Australia. This talented bunch create short films, music videos, documentaries and everything in between.

Jason is showing two of his films ; Living with Benjamin and Her Party.

Living With Benjamin is an award-winning independent short horror filmproduced by Quarter To Four in association with Drummond Ink. Her Party is about a mother that is preparing a birthday party for her younger daughter.

Natasha Muhl is a talented illustrator from the Kimberley's. She came and hung out for awhile at FYE HQ this is what she had to say.

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Natasha: My preferred mediums are pen, pencil and ink though I like to get my hands dirty with others when I feel the need.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Natasha: I enjoy when cities have an urban riverbank (such as the Swan River). It's a nice contrast between the buzz and excitement of the city versus the quiet of nature.

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Natasha: There never really was a defining moment for myself as an artist. Everyone feels comfortable in different fields. If we enjoy it we tend to develop our skills in those areas whether it's art, music or accounting. I've enjoyed creating all my life.

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its theme?

Natasha: My first piece - Celestial Dictatorship depicts an urban creation myth. My second piece Maid, Mother and Crone is about rivaling and warring city states. Where the experiment of nationalism has broken down and cities have adopted policies of isolation, leaving the mothers of the common people trying to protect the vulnerable while their husbands war with their brothers.

will presenting three films at this years FYE's Silent Cinema

1) “SHARE PATH SKATE PATH” a documentary based on a social experiment that asks ‘can skateboarders co-exist with the public in open spaces?’ This is a documentary I made to examine how skateboarding can be accommodated in Cities that have limited open spaces.

2) “CRAZY FOR CULT" a short documentary. Six years of following around two bands and two visual artists for an ongoing feature length documentary, planned to be finished in

2012. This the beginning.

3) “PARTY FOR ONE” is a super 8 short film. After blundering a one take film that tracked through a party full of drunken or impatient extras, we went back to my apartment to attempt a dance inspired film on my staircase. We shot this from 11pm to 1am the day it was due. Starring Tim Rogers.

Director John Barker graduated from CurtinUni in 2010 with a Bachelors of Arts Majoring in Film and Television. He has usually been a Producer, Director and/orSound Designer in most of his projects, however his ultimate goal is to be confidently competent inall areas of film.

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Anya: Usually acrylic, pen and ink on canvas.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Anya: I'm not a massive city fan so i'm going to say I like the light reflecting off the road when its just rained and the sun is coming out behind big grey clouds and all the signs and light posts and buildings are silhouetted.

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Anya: I guess only recently. I've always done creative things but only within the last year have I really decided this is it for me.

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its theme ?

Anya: My pieces are kind of a reaction to the city. I think I have a love/ hate relationship to city spaces. I love the energy and the opportunity but I also feel claustrophobic and smothered by cities. So I paint animals to bring me back to nature when I can't necessarily physically be there.

Lewis graduated from John Curtin College of the Arts in 2009 and spent his gap year traveling through Europe. Inspired by the amazing street art culture in Berlin and visiting the National Portrait Gallery of Scotland, he decided to return back to Perth and withdrawal from Pediatric Medicine and enroll in Fine Art at Curtin University. Lewis: Charcoal acrylic aerosol cardboard anything

Lewis: The rooftop, where the rats fly.

Lewis: I knew I wanted to be an artist after passing through the East Side gallery. My time in Berlin opened my eyes to the things you can achieve with art.

Lewis: My pieces portray the idea that beauty cannot be forced. Culture must flourish unrestricted for city spaces to become alive.

Albany artist Cherry drops by FYE HQ

Besides being the name of a delicious fruit, Cherry, is also the name of a deliciously crafty artist. Born into a family of musicians, it was no doubt this girl was heading onto creative waters. Speaking of water ( nice seg-way) , she grew up on a boat between Fremantle and Albany and always had a pen and paper to keep her sea legs from giving way... I caught up with her - this is what she had to say.

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Cherry: Pencil on paper.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Cherry: Any forgotten area, any deserted or lost space.

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
Cherry: I was always drawing as a child, it was always just for fun. Now it's serious fun.

Sarah: Explain your pieces of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its theme ?

Cherry: I love abandoned buildings. When I walk through city spaces I hunt for them. When a building becomes abandoned it no longer plays the role it was built for, it grows it's own personality. When I look at these deserted structures, I see it as a being with thoughts and feelings. Most people see broken windows and busted doors and it soon becomes invisible to them, a dead space. But it stands out to me even more this way, and I see it as still very much alive. Couple that with my fascination for hair and bones and there you have it.. my favourite things.

I can't wait to see what she has in store for this years festival - City Spaces, Hair, Bones...

Steven Christie tells us a few secrets about his artistic ways

When Steven Christie was 18 he co-created Brink Collective. Which consisted of workshops for 17-25 year olds each under the tuition of a local artists Sue Codee, Sandy O'Doherty and Trish Ware. This emerging artist is ready to dive straight into his creative flow.

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Steven: I draw with a (0.13) Faber technical pen, which is great because it gives you a really consistent thin line to work with, unfortunately they tend to break when you drop them which for me, is all the time. I like drawing with ink because every mark is permanent, you can't erase, you can only work with your mistakes. When I was a kid I was taught by some cruel primary teacher that using an eraser in class was cheating, I realise how stupid that is now, but it has definitely stuck with me

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Steven: I really like Fremantle, I've lived here for a year now and it amazes me, the buildings especially in the west end, they have this ghostly loom that I just can't get over

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Steven: I think it was in high school some time, I started to get into magazines like Monster Children; I remember issue 15 with the art dump dvd and the Mel Kadel feature really made me think about taking my art seriously. I loved the incredible details and patterns in her work and the amount of respect she treated her images with.

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its theme ?

Steven: The works are about how music and art culture can shape a city space. For me a city space is defined by what happens there, not by design. I work small so I'll be submitting a few pieces, each one exploring a different idea but adding up to one big smorgasbord to feast upon

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Ali J: Primarily collage, acrylic and watercolour. I love to call myself a mixed media artist & illustrator.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Ali J: Kings Park, the foreshore, the zoo. I'm not fond of the city or buildings or people, I find comfort in open spaces and nature.

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Ali J: I never wanted to be an artist, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I fell into it, fell in love with everything about it, and just want to keep on creating. The first moment I took myself seriously was when I put some drawings online back in May 2007. Then over the years I've had more of those moments when I sold artworks or worked for clients and now I'm starting to accept that this could be real.

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its theme ?

Ali J: My artworks speak of my experience within city spaces with a bit of imagination thrown into the mix. They tell a story.

FYE Artist Cherish Marrington, finished her fine art course last year.
She tells us about how art became a habit and her views on city spaces.

Sarah: What medium do you work with?
Cherish: Generally ink on paper. The more lines I can squeeze into a drawing the better (so I tend to use mapping pens alot). Sometimes there will be colour, and the mixtures are usually a bit unusual and the tones extreme. Hopefully enough to give people indigestion.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?
Cherish: Anything that is polluted and gross and visually dramatic--it's not a city unless it's overcrowded with a lot of thieves. Poverty can make things look interesting too.

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
Cherish: A lot of spare time when I was younger: I would habitually write down any interesting ideas I got in the form of stories. But then there were always quite a few things I didn't know how to describe and so I would fill the gaps with drawings (writing: easier than talking. Drawing: easier than writing). Drawing became more of a habit--or even a reflex--whenever I had ideas that I didn't know how to write down. Nowadays I'm a altogether reliant on drawing in this way, so naturally I knew that this was something I wanted to do in a serious manner when I noticed that I wasn't going to lose interest.

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its theme?
Cherish: I am regularly inventing new characters and for FYE I have a pair of dreary looking 'city slickers'. I don't always make finished drawings with graphite, so it's something a bit different. Originally these observations came from my sketches of people when out and about. ( usually moments when I'd be waiting around for unpunctual acquaintances) Being reflections on the personalities of people directly, I never drew buildings and other surroundings, but when I make drawings of these characters I isolate them and hope that the viewer can imagine what sort of environment they're coming from. In this series they are claustrophobic and their world is a little upsetting and all that. While they are squashed together and jostled about like battery hens or something, they remain solitary in their minds.

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Eve: At this years Feast Your Eyes Festival I'll be using water colour washes and pencil on paper to create my City Spaces themed artwork.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Eve: I love the old parts of the city, weathered buildings with beautiful intricate details tell a story about the history of that city space, long before I was even around!

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Eve: I've always been creating some kind of art, when i was little I'd write little stories and illustrate them. As i got older I would draw any chance I got. After I finished year 11 I decided not to finish school, but go to Tafe where I could just make art all day, and I haven't really stopped since then

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its theme ?

Eve: I live in the City of Albany, one of the first Settlements in WA. We have some lovely old buildings here, and I thought it would be perfect to combine the old parts of city with the new interactions of the people in these spaces today.

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Natalie: Photography with a focus on analogue.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Natalie: Anywhere there is bit of sky, a bit of green and somewhere nice to sit.

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Natalie: I didn't have a moment of epiphany. Creating art was something i just always did.

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its the theme.

Natalie: Perth isn't a very big city. My aim in my work for Feast Your Eyes was to present common Perth spaces in an uncommon way; to bring something fresh to it.

I caught up with FYE's live painter GasBombGirl.

This is what she had to say.....

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

GasBombGirl: I usually use Acrylic's, water colours, inks and pencils and lately my WACOM tablet is also becoming a favourite tool to the usual suspects.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

GasBombGirl: I quite love the old Cockburn Power Station. I know a lot of people see it as an eye sore, but those original art deco designs are so eye catching and wonderful. It would be such a fabulous building to have renovated. I can imagine, kitsch little bar's, cafe's, galleries and shops within it's deliciously styled walls - all with colourful graffiti inside kept in tact too.

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

GasBombGirl: For a long time I've flirted with the idea. I've always drawn and fiddled around with paints etc. It wasn't until I finally exhibited in a group exhibition and actually sold a piece, I was truly hooked on going down that pathway. It was such a buzz to have something sell, and to hear someone tell you how much they enjoy your artworks.

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes
Festival and its relation to its theme ?

GasBombGirl: Well I'm preparing for this live painting session with a combination of the new and old. I love modern architecture, but I also love historic buildings also. If we could combine the two amicably, the city spaces of Perth and Fremantle could be an exciting and interesting symbiont relationship for all generations who live or visit here.

Ellie Glen - Pattie Smith

Growing up in Albany this bright young thing is ready to immerse herself into the big smoke's cultural movement. I welcome her with big wide arms to this years Feast Your Eyes.

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Ellie: Usually pencil, A LOT OF ERASERS and then ink gouache and watercolour. I do love to dabble in spraypaint and big fat graphic markers too.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Ellie: I love people watching in the stark light of the train, and floating through the city at speed, so that it merges into one image in my mind. I also love all of Freo's secret corners and alleys, they feel pretty special.

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Ellie: I don't think I ever will know what I want to do with myself, but I just can't stop drawing. It's more of a compulsion than a want to create.

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its theme ?

Ellie: It's a secret, but I'll drop you some hints.. They may be a little morbid yet beautiful, just how I see the city. Typography will make an appearance, and there will be a street-art theme component.

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Kimberley: I generally work across fashion, printmaking, sculpture, paper cut outs and drawing. My piece for Feast Your Eyes will be plaster cast sculptures. At the moment I'm also learning to work silicone casts so that might bleed into this piece. I'm excited to push my boundaries with new casting techniques for this work.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Kimberley: Anything that has lots of repetitious structural elements. I love the architectural detail that often goes unnoticed like vents in walls or a repeated tile pattern. The integration of macro and micro elements that make a complete structure are very interesting to me.

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Kimberley: I don't think it was a conscious decision. Ever since I could hold a pen in my hand and make things it just felt natural.

Sarah: Explain your structural installation piece for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its theme

Kimberley: I am interested making work about order and structure through analysing relationships in organisations, hierarchies and sociology. These ideas present repetitions of macro and micro forms and internal and external elements are often found in architecture found in our city spaces. I feel city spaces combine all of these ideas and will be constructing an installation that sets up an investigation of order and structure that are found in elements of the built world/city spaces.

Miss. Pace is finishing her double major in contemporary fashion and visual arts this year - A perfect mix of mediums. Looks like we will be seeing a lot more of this lass in the future.

Spending Five with Wanjie Song

Wanjie Song, a woman of many talents, including finishing her law degree this year, tells us a little bit more about herself and what she has in store for this years festival

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Wanjie: There are too many! Pencil, charcoal, and pastels for general sketching and drawing, Pen, ink and my Copic markers for illustrations and design. If I am painting, it is always oils (I love its texture and flexibility). Photoshop always helps as well at the end of the day.

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Wanjie: Any space that is highly evocative of the history and the context that surrounds it, be it pristine space or decayed space. Furthermore, I think that space is truly significant and emotive, and therefore interesting, when it interacts with the subjects that occupy it.

Sarah: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Wanjie: Ever since I was 2. Mum taught me to draw before writing, haha. Although I have been preoccupied with my law studies the last few years, I always did a bit of art on the side to satisfy my passion. And now that uni is almost finished, I have been taking more time to really pursue my artistic endeavors, and I couldn’t be happier.

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation to its theme ?

Wanjie: I am looking to create multi-media illustrations that investigate the relationship between the modern city space and its user. The two works will hopefully contrast the positive and negative effects that the city can have on subjects who are foreign to its spaces. It will be a bit quirky and surreal, and I am looking forward to completing them.

Hanging out with Concept Artist Simon Boxer

Simon Boxer has just recently moved over east to pursue he's career. I was lucky enough to catch him before he left. What a delightful young chap.

Sarah: What medium do you work with?

Simon: A wacom tablet, Macbook and a few digital painting programs - my regulars being Painter and Photoshop. Don't confuse me with a Mac snob though, the Macbook interchanges with a desktop PC

Sarah: What is your favourite city space?

Simon: Anything imperfect, rundown, decaying or abandoned has charm unrivaled by spaces governed by rules of construction and council specifications. A pristine environment doesn't contain a story I'd like to tell. For example, an office block is far too structured and functional to be interesting, until it's been used. Until it's lived beyond its purpose, been broken down and integrated with the surroundings.

Sarah : When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Simon: At age 6 or so I wanted to be a scientist, but then I got a merit certificate for a colouring-in I did at school; a picture of a clown. Thinking back I see other students flailing wildly at the page leaving scrawl marks all over the desk, but my motor skills were honed enough to stay inside both the page and the lines. A grade 7 student later told me it was better than what she could do, so I just assumed it was the path of least resistance to impressing the ladies.

Sarah: Explain your piece (s) of artwork for this years Feast Your Eyes Festival and its relation its relation to theme ?

Simon: My pieces belong to a series of post-apocalyptic visions for Australian cities. They reflect the personality I see in different cities, and are projections of continued widescale destruction and nature's repercussion.

Voltaire Twins

After a manic 12 months that saw Voltaire Twins debut EP Cabin Fever explode on US college radio, a trip to New York, inclusion on French label Kitsune's Ponystep compliation and multiple Australian tours - both on their own and supporting Tim & Jean - Voltaire Twins return with their new single, Animalia.

The song has already been turning heads both at home and abroad, with French disco legend Lifelike and Sydney party-starters Purple Sneakers DJs contributing remixes for the release.

This year the pair will be our special guests and headline the festival. We are extremely excited to have them on board. As I'm sure all of you are!!

She was a hit at last years FYE, with attendees absolutely swooning over her owls and deers painted on recycled paper with ink. This year Billie swaps her paint brush for her guitar to sit centre stage as a solo act.
Being the daughter of well known WA musician Bill Rogers, it's no doubt that Billie was going to warm up the stage too.
Billie was paired up with Rose Parker for this years Hidden Treasures mentoring program. After weeks of learning from the more experienced, Billie got up on stage at the Low Key Musicians club on the last Thursday of the Festival and beautifully

The Lonely Brothers Perform @ this years Festival!!

After forming a little folk trio in high school, The Lonely Brothers, have added members, played a bunch of festivals, released two records and steeped themselves into the WA music scene. They take honest folky songs seriously. And dabble in the high society of jazz and chamber music, creating an old-but-new sound.
Their latest release, a self-titled album, was written while leaving home for the big smoke, and touches on first love, the ocean, isolation and going crazy. It is the first release to include the expanded lineup of double bass and drums.

Highlights for these Brothers have included appearing at Fairbridge Festival, Nannup Music Festival, Perth International Arts Festival, West Coast Blues & Roots Fringe and Nanga Folk Festival. They’ve also supported the John Butler Trio, Paul Kelly and Holly Throsby.

FYE provides a platform for emerging artists in Visual, Film and Music in a festival format.

Last Year FYE 2 was themed Revamp, Reuse Recycle. Each artist was asked to exhibit piece's using recyclable materials, products, images.

This year FYE is themed City Spaces. Our City Spaces are rapidly filling with developments and growth to make a more cohesive and vibrant city. Each artist will be asked to explore the idea of urban development, growth and vibrancy within their city spaces.

Artists who want to be a part of this will be asked to apply by application form.

Some bouncing exciting news on the horizon for all things related to "Feast" 2011.

FYE 3 Festival
Date: 15th October
Venue: Fremantle Arts Centre

We have had an overwhelming response from emerging artists in WA wanting to participate in this years Feast. Which is very exciting for us!! In aid of this we have created an application for form for artists who want to be involved. Artists will be asked to submit 3 images of their most recent work and a brief history. The images submitted are for selection purposes only, not for the Festival.

This submission form will be available within the next few weeks. And I promise you will be the first to know. If you are thinking about applying here are a just a few of the starter conditions:

1) Feast Your Eyes is open to all artists who have been practicing for up to 5 years and under.
2) $15.00 Submission Fee

Sophie Dunham and I worked together very hard and very well last year to produce two festivals. She is an absolute gem and FYE wouldn't be where it is today without her. Sophie is focusing more on her own endeavors in her music career and fashion. Yep she does all that too!!

I’m happy to announce my co- partner for the festival, Dean Carnemolla. Dean is the owner of Hole in the Wall Gallery and will manage the this years festival. Dean has had large experience in the street art world being an artist himself and also working in many galleries throughout Perth. Not only does he have vast experience he is an alright bloke too :)

The WAMi Festival is the annual celebration of the thriving original contemporary music industry in WA, attracting over 25,000 people over the course of the week.

Selected acts could be performing in one of this years many program features, including a diverse range of shows at the newly renovated Bakery (officialWAMi Festival venue), outdoor shows and annual festival highlights –Northbridge Saturday Spectacular, WAMi Awards and closing party.

The Kiss My WAMi Compilation CD/DVD is widely distributed and is nationally recognized as a compilation featuring the best of WA music. Tracks and music clips selected to feature on the compilation stand to receive valuable exposure and promotion.

Submissions will be accepted electronically through Sonicbids or physical application. All original WA acts are encouraged to apply, and there are a limited number of opportunities for guest acts from outside WA.

All the WAMi Festival application details and forms are available at the WAMwebsite. Submissions close 5:00pm AWST Friday 4 March 2011. Please note that no extensions will be given.

The City of Joondalup invites artists to submit proposals for a small public art project as part of a new community sporting facility at Seacrest Park in Sorrento.

The proposed artwork has been included in the development to add aesthetic value to the site and to celebrate the cultural identity and lifestyle ofSeacrest Park’s user groups and the local community.

The Seacrest Park Community Sporting Facility will predominately be used by the Sorrento Duncraig Junior and Senior Cricket Clubs and theSorrento Duncraig Junior Football Club. It will also be available for hire by other community groups for daytime use.

The value of the commission is $35,000 ex GST.

The timeline for completion means the project may be suited to a large scale mural or wall treatment – however proposals of any nature will be accepted and considered. A variety of sites within the new facility are available for the location of an artwork.

Proposals are due by Monday 24th January 2011.

For 15 years the Craigie Walls provided a place for writers to paint without fear of prosecution or persecution. With the destruction of the walls in 2009 a retrospective publication is now being made to document the stories and pieces that were painted there from 1994 -2009. Submissions are now being requested for images, sketches and tales from the individuals that made this site an important place in West Australian Graffiti culture.

FYE festivals offer great exposure for you as an artist and will open up many doors within the art community - The team will happily market and promote you through our online sites and published media - We will endeavor to create a festival/ exhibition that provides growth for the city and you as an artist.... In return we will give you fooken WOW of a night, some Cider and some love. What more you could you ask for?

All of us here at Feast Land are always very grateful for the support we get. Sometimes I'm blown away at how generous people can be - Seriously!

The team would like thank artist Prez Juan and graphic design guru Meng Jones for creating our awesome FYE 2 Poster.

Dedicated Artist Prez Juan designed the first logo (& poster) for the event. And its was so good we decided to keep it FORVER!!! Prez also showcased his talents in some live aerosol art at FYE 1 with artists Dave Misled, Reboot and Ryan Boserio. He will be hitting the stage again next Saturday the 4th with fellow artists Dave Misled and Reboot spraying up some old front doors! Amongst many of his talents, Prez is also a professional Tattooist. He travels from friendly Fremantle every day to the not-so friendly Midland where he works at "Artistic Skin Art Studio". In three words- Dedicated, professional and talented. Yep. This pretty much sums Prez Juan up! Get in line for an artistic tattoo by Prez Juan here :)!

Meng Jones - By day a creamy delicious coffee maker, by night extraordinary graphic designer. Miss. Jones just finished an intense graphic design course which has put her in good steed ahead of others. She designs posters for local music gigs (Hussle Hussle!) and recently finished our FYE 2 poster. This amazing lass is one to watch for she can not only make really good coffee but she is also a wizz at Illustrator and PhotoShop. Why did you become an artist?

It was always a dream to have the time to 'do art', over the past ten years I have slowly been able to turn the dream into a reality... The dream is still evolving and I would love to say one day 'I am an Artist' ...not quite yet..

What was the last album you bought?

Last Album...A friend recently bought me 'The Eels', love the quirky lyrics and it makes driving in the rain very pleasant.

Who is your major art influence?

I love so many Artists and different Art forms/styles, I'm sure I am influenced by a multitude of people, places, moments....

You have a studio that sells all things creative in Fremantle. What have you stumbled across lately that you loved?

A very cute series of collages on canvas done by a local artist. I hope to get them in the shop soon...

You use many mediums. Which one is your favourite?

Oils are my favourite which I don't use a lot at the moment but I've been very happy doing Feast Work in oils.

Summer or Winter? Oh summer! Sleeping outside and sallty skin...

Who is your favourite artist? mmm too hard to choose :)

Life would be simple if we had a little glow fairy that would tidy, sweep and hang art work all day. Unfortunately life has thrown us a fairy who doesn't do anything but hang out at the beach all day drinking pina-coladas. Lucky her. So without the glow fairy we need some other fairies to volunteer their help. I promise I won't call you fairies all day either. That joke stops right here. I promise.
We need some awesome humans (thats better right?) who will volunteer their time to help pre and post event. Your key responsibilities will be assisting Miss. Sophie Dunham, our wonderful curator, in whatever she wants you to do. Clearly we have 15 artists with a lot of art work so mainly we will need help in that area as well as a a few funny jokes thrown in to lighten our stressed little brains!

Of course there will be free entry for all your hard work and a pick at the gourmet cheese platters before anyone gets there ;)

FYE Silent Auction ♥'s The Australian Conservation Foundation

All funds from our 'so hot right now' silent auction will go to the "South West Marine Project" and support the "Kimberly's indigenous eco industries". We are so proud to be supporting these campaigns through our well saught after auction pieces which each artist has worked so hard on.

Here is little bit about where YOUR money will go:

The South West Marine Project has been in place to protect our precious sea life from the areas of Kalbarri and Eucla on the West Australian coast line. It is no secret that big fish including pink snapper and red snapper are being over fished in these areas which results in a major decline of sea life. The government have put in a 'no take' policy around some selected areas hoping to put our nation at the forefront of international efforts to protect the world's oceans.

ACF’s Kimberley Officer Paul Marshall says “We view Indigenous tourism as a sector with enormous potential to deliver sustainable employment and livelihoods for Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley. It is an industry that neatly combines culture and conservation to build an economic base and compatible enterprises such as camps and guided walks. ACF is supporting a group of operators and realise their full potential".

of Seafood from our local, "Sardines Fish Cafe".Chef Callum

Johnston will supply the evening with a BBQ of fresh little sea creatures. YUMMO!! And well if you don't like either of those things there will plenty of antipasto and goodness on the artsy gourmet cheese platters done by Ripe Food Art.

The guys at Ripe Art deliver the best quality with great service. Each Cheese Platter will be designed to the theme of the evening which is recycling.

A Little "Something" With Artist Kathrin Peters :)

Something that you paint with?
My fingers sometimes … allthough I usually use

paint brushes and a lot of oil paint. I really like to apply thick layers of paint on my canvas. When I make sketches I also work with acrylic paint or water colours.

Something you do when you’re procrastinating?

I try out the most amazing recipes and cook or bake for hours. And I nibble so much while I am cooking that when the food is finished I am not hungry anymore.

Something you wanted to do, but haven't yet?

There is really too much to list. I would like to travel to lots of places that I haven’t been to, yet. Things I haven’t tried at all that I would love to do are write a novel, learn to ride a motorbike and be able to make a living as an artist!

Something that gets your creative mind flowing?

I always get the best ideas when my mind has time to wander and I don’t have

any pressure or deadlines lingering around. The best ideas come to me when

I am day dreaming. Books, movies, songs and the work of other artists can

sometimes inspire me!

Something that concerns you?

People that don’t care about anything.

Something you love about your art?

I love the process itself- from the first idea until the moment your work is completed- although some pieces never seem to be finished!

Something that makes you feel like jumping in the air?

Lots of things- I love jumping in the air, especially when I am ready to go on a holiday or a camping trip, listen to a great song, finish a painting or a photo series that I am happy with or catch up with someone I haven’t seen in a long time!

Something that you have planned for FYE 2?

I am working on a photo series which has the theme “Recycle a Friend”- the concept is done and now I need to start shooting it!!!

Feast Your Eyes is Back

Remember Feast your Eyes? Well it’s back, hurray.

The Sun Orchestra will play at the event in the Fremantle Arts Centre and Bec Litton will be painting live on stage.

Did you know silent auctions are so hot right now? The Cat’s Pyjamas had one and Feast your Eyes will have one too.

Thirteen of the FYE artists have painted on canvas fabric which has been passed onto embroiderers to create collaborative pieces. FYE 2 is jam packed with so much to Feast your Eyes on. To Add to this delectable banquet there will also be a silent auction. All Proceeds will go to the Australian Conservation Foundation for a Western Australian Environmental Campaign.

We gave each artist a piece of canvas 40x40, donated by the kind people at Jackson's Art Supplies,

and they were under strict instructions (!) to paint whatever they like on it.

Then once completed each piece will be passed on to an embroiderer who will then re-work/embroider over to create a tangible 3D wall hanging for your pleasure.

Here is a sneak preview of the the auction pieces before the embroiderers get to them!

I love my family, the sound of laughter and trees.

I hate war and cruelty to animals.

I create when I'm redecorating.

I sleep when I can no longer stay awake.

I drive to most places.. when you have kids you're a chauffeur.

I walk to the park everyday with my dog Errol, a Papillon.

I paint on furniture usually.

I paint with acrylics, gouache and sample pots.

I laugh when something tickles my fancy, when brother talks.

I growl when my dog pees on my furniture.

I eat anything that's been cooked beautifully and that's healthy.

I don't eat junk food.

I am excited about FYE because... it's my first exhibition, I am a huge re-cycler and it's a fantastic thing to be apart of!

What are you addicted to?

Cheese. Right now there are seven different types in my fridge. Parmesan, fetta, gruyere, tasty, mozzarella, blue-vein and bocconcini. A bit obsessive, I know.

People. I’m always with friends and family, being social. I rarely spend time by myself, other than when I’m writing or painting. I get energy and inspiration from interactions with other human beings, so I crave it constantly!

Why has art come into your life?

Art was always in my life. I was surrounded by it growing up; our house was full of art. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t paint.

When will you ride the bus again?

Tomorrow! I catch a train and a bus to work every weekday.

What medium do you like to use to produce your work?

Mostly I use acrylic paint, recycled fabrics, and recycled tissue paper on canvas. Occasionally I’ll use pastel chalks and ink on recycled paper.

Why is the Sky blue?

It isn’t. It’s translucent! The appearance of blue is caused by sunlight colliding with the earth’s atmosphere. The effect is called “Rayleigh Scattering” which I always thought was quite a pretty name for the phenomena. White light from the sun is made up of all the colours of the rainbow, but blue light scatters the most because it has the shortest wavelength and so is reflected by air particles, rather than being absorbed by them like the other colours are. Actually violet has a shorter wavelength, but human eyes aren’t receptive to ultra-violet light so we can’t see it very well. Which is a shame as I think a violet sky would be quite a lovely thing.

The sky goes red at sunset and sunrise, because the light comes in at an almost horizontal angle to the earth, and the sun’s path through the atmosphere is so long that most of the blue light has been scattered out before it reaches our eye. And at nighttime there is no light to be refracted, so the sky is no longer blue, and instead reveals its true translucence, letting us see right into the infinite blackness of space! Beautiful!

When do you feel like jumping in the air?

In summer when the air is hot and the sun is shining and life feels festive and full of possibility.

What inspires you to paint?

Nature. Travel and adventures. Friends. Rich tastes and scents. Love. Nostalgia. Bodies and beautiful shapes. Heartbreak. Delicious exotic food. Catharsis for stress and/or sadness. Music. Faces.

Why can you only put mascara on when your mouth is open?

And I yes I always open my mouth when applying mascara and eyeliner! So bizarre! I can't work out if it's to help me concentrate, or if it keeps the skin taught and stops the mascara wand hitting my cheekbones... or a bit of both...

When we see you at the next Feast, what do you have in store for us and why?

Big bold pieces with lots of different textures and fabrics, as well as vibrant colours, as I’m drawn to sunset and spice hues at the moment.
